No More Bad Hair Days?

So… I’m not exactly what you’d call a girly-girl. Not a shoe addict or a shopaholic… and … hats? Hats are for women with “anchor woman hair” – not curly mop-tops like me…

So when 3Graces Theater Co. commissioned Sharyn Rothstein to write a play on the subject of faith, imagine my surprise when Sharyn told me I would be playing a Muslim American schoolteacher who wears a Hijab to work in a Public School. Yow-za.

This is not my first time donning Headgear for Faith –  I played Sister Mary Bi-Polar, um, I mean, Sister Mary Thomasina, in full length habit and wimple in a production of Catholic School Girls in 2004. But this awesome little script features a tense and funny face-off between a working single mom [played by the talented Cherelle Cargill] and my impassioned hijab wearing schoolteacher. Sharyn’s new play Parent Teacher packs a powerful little punch as directed by hot young director Kel Haney. Kel works all the time all over town and now I know why. She’s a real powerhouse. Working on this project has been incredibly uplifting – a great experience. Parent Teacher is part of a 3G’s slate of two one-acts in At The Corner of Faith and Reason playing at the Cherry Lane in May-June.
